Lily & Honey – an artisan bakery in Oakham, Leicestershire

I spent the weekend in Sherwood Forest. Mostly off my phone. I was kind of sad not to drive via Nottingham which has some great looking bakeries and Luisa’s Vegan Chocolates. But I found a bakery that was less of a detour, just near beautiful Rutland Water, in Oakham.

So, here is:

A great bakery off the A1 going North from London!

It’s about 15 minutes West if you come off at the Stamford Junction onto the A606.

Lily & Honey are teeny tiny. You step inside the door and bump up to the table where mountains of dough are being cut and weighed and shaped. Just behind the people shaping the dough and serving the customers are the ovens and the racks. To the right are the tables ladened with sweet treats. I missed any viennoiserie but I’ll be back because the pecan and dark chocolate cookie and the seeded loaf I bought makes me trust they can probably try their hand at any baked good and succeed.

Robert and Nicolle Bradbury opened the bakery in 2019 and it’s probably the most modern thing in the pretty town of Oakham. They’re currently only open Wednesday to Saturday from 9am to 2pm. It’s take away only but you’ll probably want to wander the streets or go to nearby Rutland Water or Rutland Gardens (you can’t take food into the gardens though as they have their own tea room).

I’ll mention this again in this week’s podcast. You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts!
